February 2012 Donations

Old River Optimist Club (OROC) made two donations this month - one to the After-School Arts Program and one to the St. John's Catholic School Music Program.  Both programs are valuable educational programs for our area youth efforts. OROC is proud to sponsor such admirable programs.  In addition to sponsoring these two programs, OROC is also exploring fundraising activities with these groups. In the early fall, OROC and the After-School Arts Program will be selling a school-year calendar and all funds will be dedicated to the local arts program. Closer to Christmas, OROC will be sponsoring  a Christmas music cd with music performed by local youth musicians. OROC sincerely appreciates both of these organizations for bringing these opportunities to our attention in "Bringing Out the Best in Kids". Lisa Burridge and Talis Jayme attended this evening's meeting on behalf of the After-School Arts Program and DL Murphy represented the St. John's Catholic School Music Program.

OROC 2011 Christmas Party

Toys For Tots
OROC and Artwork's co-hosted Christmas Party was a huge success. There were plenty of wonderful appetizers and beverages provided by members of OROC and artists from the gallery. Several hundred dollars of new, unwrapped toys were donated to the Marines' Toys-for-Tots program (Noah delivered these the following morning). Talis Jayme and Noah Moseley welcomed everyone to this joint Christmas Party. Arlene Carr and Michael Bennett spoke about OROC's  donations of ten (10) winter jackets to local area kids and OROC presented $300 to the local Boys & Girls Club. Special thanks to everyone who brought toys, food, drinks and to Christie Taylor for being an exceptional bartender and to Pat McCann who played Christmas music for us throughout the evening. Merry Christmas to you all!

Gallery Night at Capstone Academy

OROC Members around Capstone pictures from Gallery Night
Capstone Academy held its first annual Gallery Night on December 1, 2011.  Old River Optimist Club has been a long-time sponsor of Capstone Academy and is proud to have been a part of this new event at the school. OROC members, Talis Jayme & Lisa Burridge, led art lessons for the students at the school while the kids created paintings for Gallery Night which were proudly displayed at the school and auctioned off as a fundraiser for Capstone. Thanks to their time and talent and love for art and kids, the  night was a great success. OROC, Capstone and all of the kids wish to extend their sincere appreciation to Talis and Lisa. Pictures from the event are on display at Artworks Studio & Gallery at the Villagio Shops on Perdido Key.

Hardee's Collegiate Holiday Golf Classic - December 28-30
OROC's golf partner, the Emerald Coast Junior Golf Association (ECJGA.com), is having its annual Hardee's Collegiate Holiday Golf Classic on December 28, 29 and 30. The tournament will be held at the Perdido Bay Golf Course on all three days. OROC will be volunteering as needed so let us know if you will be available to help out with the tournament by emailing us at HelpingKids@OldRiverOptimistClub.org that you are interested in helping. Details are also online at http://www.oldriveroptimistclub.org/2011/12/hardees-collegiate-2011-holiday-golf.html

If you are interested:
OROC needs committee members for youth music and art programs. As public funding is cut from these programs due to political and economic reasons, we need to step up our efforts to support these programs. That begins with you stepping forward and joining the committee. Email me at HelpingKids@OldRiverOptimistClub.org and I will put you in touch with the right people. Let's keep our kids painting, singing, writing, dancing, acting and playing.

OROC's calendar is updated online and is located here: http://oldriveroptimistclub.blogspot.com/2011/03/oroc-upcoming-events.html

OROC Closes 2011 with Year End Membership Drive

Old River Optimist Club (OROC) does great things for the community but we need great members to keep doing those great things. Our donations to the Ronald McDonald House, Capstone Academy, Mary's Shelter, Alabama Tornado Relief Efforts, Kids' Summer Meals Program, Friends of the Southwest Branch Library, After School Arts Programs, Perdido Bay Community Center, Perdido Bay Youth Sports Association and numerous other programs are all made through efforts of our existing members and generous donations from people just like you - people who care about kids. To keep OROC going, we need members just like you who understand the importance of charity to the community. Tell your friends. Invite your neighbors. We have many events coming up in December. Every one of those events is an opportunity for you and your friends to become involved in the community. Email us at HelpingKids@OldRiverOptimistClub.org for membership details.
